Supporting Parents: A Collaborative Approach to Family Growth

At Trekwise, we believe that meaningful change starts with understanding and collaboration. Recently, one of our coaches had a session with a parent, Lisa, who was struggling to connect with her teenage son, Max. Lisa felt overwhelmed by the tension at home and wanted to foster a more supportive environment.

Coaching Session: Setting the Foundation

During the session, our coach and Lisa discussed her concerns about Max’s screen time and his reluctance to share his feelings. The coach guided Lisa through Trekwise’s core principles: fostering open communication, setting empowering boundaries, and building compassionate accountability. They explored strategies for creating a space where Max could feel heard and respected.

Instead of dictating rules, the coach suggested that Lisa involve Max in setting guidelines for screen time, homework, and other responsibilities. This would help Max feel more in control and invested in following the boundaries they set together. Lisa left the session feeling hopeful and equipped with new tools to try at home.

Parent Feedback: Implementing the Approach

A few weeks later, Lisa returned with encouraging feedback. She shared that she had a heart-to-heart conversation with Max, using the techniques discussed with the coach. By giving Max a voice in creating rules around his screen time and schoolwork, she noticed a significant shift in their dynamic. Max started engaging more openly, and their relationship felt less tense.

Lisa also implemented the idea of compassionate accountability by setting up a weekly check-in with Max. This allowed him to discuss his progress and any challenges he faced, making him feel supported rather than judged. She found that this approach not only helped Max stay on track but also built trust between them.

Celebrating Small Wins

Lisa shared that she and Max began celebrating small wins together—whether it was completing homework on time or sticking to their agreed screen time limits. This positive reinforcement boosted Max's confidence and made him more willing to communicate and cooperate.

The feedback from Lisa was a testament to the power of Trekwise’s first principles: open communication, empowering boundaries, and compassionate accountability. These principles can help parents like Lisa build stronger, more connected relationships with their teens.
